tarting this 2013/2014 academic year, new students at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) will be obliged to join the so-called New Student Successful Learner Training (PPSMB), a program specially designed for them.
'They will get a certificate of graduation at the end of the program. Those who fail will be obliged to retake the same program next year,' the university's student affairs director, Senawi, told reporters in Yogyakarta.
The PPSMB, according to Senawi, was like the Study Orientation and Getting Acquainted with School program, or ospek as it is more commonly known, but it would exclude hazing or similar initiations.
The PPSMB was aimed at developing the students' emotional and spiritual ability as well as their social care, Senawi added.
The program will be held on Sept. 2-3, during which the new students will be introduced to the university's values and infrastructure, and it will be followed by soft-skills training.
'The soft-skills training will last for a month with sessions being offered once-a-week,' Senawi said.
The program's coordinator, Muhammad Luthfi Firdaus, said that a Nusantara parade would also take place during the training, in which participants would be gathered to create a formation of the Red and White flag.
'They will all wear red or white caping (traditional hats) so they can form the national flag,' Luthfi said.
Other programs include an event along Jl. Kaliurang, which passes through the campus, where students will conduct theatrical performances and display posters offering solutions to the country's problems.
