Ahok praises deputy for punishing errant civil servants

J

akarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama praised on Monday his deputy, Djarot Saiful Hidayat, for punishing civil servants who played hookie.

He was referring to an incident earlier this month when Djarot checked the offices at City Hall to see whether officials were present on a workday that had public holidays on either side of it.

In the impromptu inspection, Djarot found that a number of civil servants had skipped work to either go away or stay at home. The angry deputy governor then punished the errant civil servants by telling them to be at work on a Sunday to rid City Hall of rats and cockroaches. He himself supervised their work.

"I respect Pak Djarot for his assertiveness. I don't think I would have had the courage to do what he did if I were in his position," Ahok said during a public meeting at City Hall on Monday. (ebf)(+++)
