The Jakarta administration's efforts to revitalize public transportation is not easy, says a city official.
The head of land transportation at the Transportation Agency, Emanuel Kristanto, said that revitalization would mean completely changing the habits of passengers and drivers.
He gave as an example how people whose standard fare was rice would find it dificult to switch to an alternative staple food such as bread or potatoes.
"So if residents are used to getting on and off [minivans and minibuses] wherever they please, and if drivers are used to the payment system, it would be difficult to change that. These are our targets in revitalizing public transportation. We hope to change those habits," Emanuel said at City Hall on Monday.
Public transportation revitalization aims to eradicate the 'setoran' system in which drivers are obligated to collect a set sum of money in fares to pay the owners. Instead, the city administration through city-owned bus operator PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) will pay minivan and minibus owners per kilometer traveled.(+++)
