The adoptive mother of dead child Engeline, Margriet Megawe, has denied that she murdered the girl.
Dian Pongkor, a member of Margriet's lawyer team, said in Denpasar, Bali, on Saturday that Agustinus 'Agus' Tai Hamdamai's statement that he was promised Rp 200 million (US$15,012) as payment to bury Engeline's corpse was untrue, and dismissed the claim that Margriet killed Engeline.
'It is not true, Margriet did not kill her own child. [Margriet] is angry with [Agus]. That is why I asked her to be patient, this is a process, all will be revealed in the court,' he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
On Saturday, Margriet underwent a fourth questioning as a witness in the murder case at the Bali Police headquarters, where she is under detention.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Child Protection (KPA) and the Forum for Balinese Children (FADB) staged a demonstration in front of Margriet's residence, calling for an end to violence against children.
KPA chair Ariest Merdeka Sirait said the demonstration was aimed at turning the Engeline case into a rallying point for the prevention of all forms of violence against children, child abandonment, child exploitation and bullying.
The commission, he said, also planned to build a monument in remembrance of Engeline.
Denpasar mayor Ida Bagus Rai Dhramawijaya Mantra, meanwhile, said the Engeline case was a cause for sorrow. 'We don't want similar cases to occur in the future and we have a special agency to handle problems relating to women and children,' he said. (rms)(+++)
