fire razed eight houses in densely populated Kampung Rawa Sawah, Johar Baru, Central Jakarta, on Saturday morning.
The Central Jakarta Fire Disaster Mitigation Agency, Muchtar Zakaria, said preliminary investigations showed the cause of the fire was a burning cigarette that set fire to a mattress in a house whose owners were not home at the time.
Muchtar told Warta Kota that the mattress fire spread to a pile of used plastic bottles and cups, making the blaze bigger and harder to extinguish.
'The fire razed eight houses, mostly two-story,' Muchtar said.
The agency deployed 21 fire trucks, which extinguished the fire in about 90 minutes, he said.
'The challenge was the narrow access to the location,' he said.
The Jakarta fire agency recorded that from January to Sept. 12 this year, the capital has seen 993 fires, killing 14 people and injuring 57 residents as well as 23 firefighters.
