The government will grant amnesty to 150 members of an Acehnese armed group led by Nurdin Ismail aka Din Minimi, following his surrender to security authorities on Monday, a senior intelligence official has said.

National Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Sutiyoso said on Tuesday that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly and the House of Representatives had agreed to give amnesty to the members of the armed group.

Sutiyoso said granting amnesty to the group’s members was considered a conflict resolution measure.

“The process of granting amnesty may take time, however,” Sutiyoso said as quoted by kompas.com at a press conference in Lhokseumawe on Tuesday.

“The group has requested amnesty for its 120 members who have left their hiding places and for 30 members who have been apprehended by the police,” he said.

Sutiyoso added that he had communicated with Aceh Police chief Insp. Gen. Husein Hamidi and Maj. Gen. Agus Kriswanto, the commander of the Iskandar Muda Military Area Command.

“These two security leaders in Aceh are very cooperative. I appreciate those who have supported the settlement of the Din Minimi case in a well-mannered way,” he said.

The intelligence chief said one of the demands from Din Minimi was that the government help widows and fatherless children as well as former Free Aceh Movement (GAM) combatants to have more prosperous lives. However, Sutiyoso said the request would primarily be responded to by local administrations.

“Meanwhile the central government will follow up on Din’s request for amnesty for his men,” said Sutiyoso.

Din Minimi had long been a major target of security operations before he reportedly surrendered on Monday evening.

The Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict'€™s (IPAC) latest report entitled '€œDin Minimi: The Strange Story of an Armed Group in Aceh, Indonesia'€ revealed that Din had drawn the attention of parties wishing to see the GAM-led Aceh Party discredited. They included the party'€™s political rivals, intelligence personnel and extremists.

At the press conference, Sutiyoso said negotiations between the government and the Din Minimi-led armed group had taken place over the last two months. He corrected previously circulated information that only 11 armed group members had agreed to surrender.

'€œIn total, 120 members of the group agreed to go down the mountain. I have talked to them. I even stayed overnight at Din'€™s house last night,'€ said Sutiyoso.

Dozens of weapons, munitions, magazines and grenades belonging to the armed group were reportedly handed over and will be transported to BIN headquarters in Jakarta.

'€œThe President'€™s directive is clear: Solve Din Minimi-related problems with a tender approach. The result is, as you can see, Din has agreed to go down the mountain,'€ said Sutiyoso. (ebf)
