T

wo students from high school SMA Negeri 1 Paya Bakong, North Aceh, have been selected to represent Indonesia at the International Matrix Competition in Kazakhstan.

Fadlon and Maulidi Rahmi were chosen after they won silver medals in the Indonesia Science Project Olympiad (ISPO) 2017 in Tangerang, Banten, which took place from Feb. 23 to 26.

In the ISPO competition, the two students did scientific research on computer software applications for deaf people. “Thank goodness, it’s such a great achievement. Two students from SMA Negeri 1 Paya Bakong have won silver medals and been selected to join the next competition that will be held in Kazakhstan,” the school’s principal Sayuti said in a statement.

He said it was quite a surprise that students from SMA Negeri 1 Paya Bakong, a school in a remote area in Aceh, would be selected to represent Indonesia in an international competition.

Support from academics, science activists and education enthusiasts is needed to help Fadlon and Maulidi participate in the competition in Kazakhstan, Sayuti said. “Hopefully, these two students can go to the international competition.” (ebf)
