Singer Melanie Subono reported stray animal rescuer Doni Herdaru to the police for alleged embezzlement on Tuesday.
After filing the report, Melanie said Doni had misused donations received by his Animal Defenders Foundation to care for rescued animals. Her lawyer, Henry Adiguna, said there were indications that the money had been used for Doni’s personal needs.
“Our client Melanie Subono filed a police report on Doni under the law on foundations,” he said as quoted by tempo.co.

Melanie claims the foundation has received donations since 2013 and all of the money had been transferred to Doni’s private bank account. She said that three former foundation staff members had told her they had been physically abused by Doni when they worked there.
Melanie previously filed a report on suspected animal abuse and negligence allegedly committed by Doni. Explaining the case, Melanie said she had entrusted her five dogs to Doni’s shelter for care in July last year, but only four of them had been returned.
Melanie claimed Doni kept avoiding her and gave unclear reasons when she demanded to see her 8-year-old pug Nina. She then later found out that the dog had died in the Animal Defender shelter. (idb/dan)
