akarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno said the Jakarta administration will prohibit becak (pedicab) drivers from outside the capital operating in the city, following the administration’s plan to allow the vehicles to operate despite being banned for decades.
“We have gathered data on becak drivers in the city. Therefore, only those who are registered can operate the vehicles here,” Sandiaga said on Friday, adding that the city administration would return "outsiders" to their hometowns should they be found illegally operating in Jakarta.
The administration has started gathering data and distributing special stickers to 180 becak drivers in Penjagalan, Penjaringan, North Jakarta.
Despite having been prohibited by the administration since the 1980s, the pedal-driven vehicles can still be found in some areas in the city, especially in the northern part of Jakarta.
Bylaw No. 8/2007 on public order stipulates that the operation of becak in the city is prohibited. However, Governor Anies Baswedan has announced that he will allow becak to operate in residential areas. He said he will soon issue a gubernatorial decree on the matter.
