ount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores regency, East Nusa Tenggara, erupted multiple times on Monday and Tuesday, showering nearby villages with ash and volcanic rocks and disrupting air travel across several provinces.
Between midnight and 6 a.m. local time on Tuesday, the 1,584-meter-tall twin-peaked volcano erupted twice, spewing ash columns of medium to high density that reached up to 4 kilometers above the summit.
"Both eruptions were recorded with amplitudes ranging from 7.4 to 14.8 millimeters and lasted 63 and 191 seconds, respectively," said Emanuel Rofinus Bere from the Volcano Monitoring Post (PGA) on Tuesday, as reported by Kompas.com.
The previous day, Mt. Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted at 11:05 a.m., spewing a thick, greyish-black ash column that soared 18 km above the summit.
The eruption also triggered a pyroclastic flow, a fast-moving, scorching avalanche of volcanic gas, ash and debris that traveled up to 5 km to the north and northeast of the volcano.
The event was recorded with an amplitude of 47.3 mm and lasted six minutes and 26 seconds.
Later that evening, at 7:32 p.m., the volcano erupted violently again, sending an ash column 13 km into the sky.
