T

he government has vowed to clear illegally erected buildings and those located in disaster-prone areas in Puncak, a popular tourist destination in Bogor regency, West Java.

Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said on Monday that the ministry had identified 503 such structures in the area, 82 percent of which had no proper documentation.

“We will continue to conduct further research, and we will check and we will [implement] the regulation accordingly,” Agus said.

People living in Greater Jakarta often travel to Puncak on holidays or their days off, staying in rented villas, local properties they own or hotels built along the main road traversing the mountainous area.

However, growing demand for tourism and leisure has led to massive local developments, including those that do not have the necessary permits and do not comply with building regulations.

Loss of vegetation in the area has been blamed on frequent landslides and flash floods in Bogor regency.
