T

he secretary of the Office of the Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister (Kemenko PMK), Y.B. Satya Sananugraha, has just facilitated a employees familiarization session on current progress in the national mental revolution movement and bureaucracy reform.

The familiarization program was conducted on Sept. 22 after the office’s employees had finished their regular Friday sports activities.

“Mental revolution” is a term coined by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to refer to the methods by which citizens can improve their way of thinking and behavior, so that they may perform at their best and attain high achievements as a people.

In its concrete elements, ”mental revolution” consists of positive approaches such as work ethics, achievement drive, aiming for productivity, cooperation and solidarity, a sense of responsibility, self-discipline and respecting law and order.

Jokowi believes that by improving the way we think and behave as a people, we can help the country to reach new heights.

After opening the familiarization program, Sananugraha briefed employees on current progress in the mental revolution movement, which has been spearheaded by the human development and culture office over the past few years in support of the President’s vision.

Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf, head of the office’s mental revolution task force, the national campaign has manifested in real behavioral change among Indonesian citizens, such as the awareness to queue at train ticket windows. However, Ahmad said that behavioral change had not yet reached critical mass.

“The Jokowi administration wants all elements of society to practice mental revolution on a wide scale in order to bring about positive change of a massive magnitude that impacts everyone,” he said.

Sananugraha concluded the familiarization program by asking employees to sign a banner to indicate their commitment to making the mental revolution and bureaucracy reform programs a success.

“The banner-signing ceremony should be more than just a symbolic act; it must be accompanied by [employees’] real commitment to be agents of change in implementing the two programs,” he said.

To make the programs more efficient, Sananugraha announced the task forces that would implement specific aspects of the mental revolution movement, of service, hygiene, public order, self-sufficiency and national unity.
