Sinar Mas Land Supports MSME Development South Tangerang Mayor Airin Rachmi Diany talks about the important role of markets in a smart city in front of micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) owners in the Pasar Rakyat School program at Pasar Modern farmers’ market in BSD City, South Tangerang, on Nov, 23.

One major component of a smart city is a smart economy, in which smart people and smart infrastructure and technology are necessary.

BSD City’s Pasar Modern is economically vital for local communities and an integral part of the smart city.

Therefore, it is important to improve the technological skills of the farmers’ market’s micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) owners to support smart city development at BSD City and ensure effective use of Pasar Modern both for traders and the general public.

As Pasar Modern’s management company, Sinar Mas Land, one of Indonesia’s leading property developers, routinely holds its Pasar Rakyat (People’s Market) School program, comprising training on various topics for local MSME owners.

The program aims to improve business players’ skills in obtaining revenue and developing their businesses.

Sinar Mas Land built Pasar Modern on a 3.2-hectare plot of land in BSD City in 2004. The goal was to transform the crowded and messy image of traditional markets into a modern, clean and well-organized market that can better support the economic and trade growth of local MSME players. BSD City’s Pasar Modern is one of the first of its kind and is often used as a model for modern traditional market development by the government and private sector.

.

Since its launch, BSD City’s Pasar Modern has housed more than 800 MSMEs and has been able to compete with retail giants. Other than BSD City’s Pasar Modern, Sinar Mas Land has also developed three other similar markets, namely Intermoda modern traditional market, Kota Wisata modern traditional market and Grand Wisata modern traditional market. These modern traditional markets are proofs of Sinar Mas Land’s commitment in giving the opportunity for local MSMEs to be integral parts of Sinar Mas Land development projects. Through these markets, Sinar Mas Land works together with 3,000 MSMEs as development partners.

The Intermoda modern traditional market, for instance, has been very popular among buyers thanks to its proximity to the Cisauk train station in Tangerang, Banten, which will also be transformed into a modern intermodal transportation station that accommodates different modes of public transportation. The market’s clean and neat arrangement has also attracted many people from middle-to-upper socioeconomic bracket who lives in BSD City.

The Trade Ministry will cooperate with Sinar Mas Land in managing Pasar Modern in Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD), South Tangerang. The cooperation includes detailed engineering design (DED) assistance for several types of traditional markets.

As part of Sinar Mas Land’s commitment to supporting small business players, the company will also work together with the government in providing training for managers of farmers’ markets.

Currently, the cooperation has reached business players in 30 provinces. The government has also named BSD City’s Pasar Modern as a benchmark in the management of traditional markets with modern standards.

Its cooperation with traditional markets also involves sharing best practices. On Oct. 18, 50 representatives who manage traditional markets within the 30 provinces covered by the cooperation visited BSD City’s Pasar Modern to learn proper traditional market administration and management.

Aside from that, they also learned about building design as well as how it devises standard operational procedure (SOP) for its business operations. The SOP will then be used as a point of reference by the representatives in running their traditional markets in their respective provinces.
