T

he COVID-19 pandemic has truly turned a lot of people’s lifestyles upside down. The pandemic has given people no choice but to remain stuck at home for the majority of their time. At the same time, a lot of public activities involving crowds of individuals, including school teaching and learning activities, have swiftly been shifted online to prevent virus clusters from forming.

Conducting teaching and learning activities virtually is by no means an easy thing to do, although by this time we have already invented enough e-learning platforms powered by state-of-the-art technology such as Google Classroom, Edmodo and Moodle, which have made remote teaching and learning activities much more convenient.

Online teaching and learning systems can more easily be applied to subjects that involve a lot of abstract reasoning such as mathematics or language, as students can actually practice skills in these areas fairly independently at home.

However, teaching and learning subjects requiring intensive and extensive physical interaction and contact like physical education (PE) can be very tricky to lead through online platforms.

The online learning situation has eventually prompted some PE teachers to simplify their lessons. After all, the main objective of PE is not so much pushing students to master certain sports games or techniques, but to inculcate a discipline among them to cultivate a physically healthy lifestyle on a daily basis.

You can help your students maintain their physical fitness simply by encouraging them to conduct these three simple exercise regimens on a daily basis:

Push-ups and sit-ups

Push-ups and sit-ups are among the two most popular strength and endurance exercises that people like to do at home, because these exercises are quite simple and easy to do, requiring no props at all besides a space as big as a bathtub.

Push-ups can help a person build the strength of their upper core body parts, while sit-ups can help a person strengthen their overall core strength, while minimizing risks of back pain and injury.

Yet, within the simplicity of push-up and sit-up movements, therein lies their complexity: unless you perform these movements with the right techniques, you would not benefit from them.

Keeping this thing in mind, it is important for teachers to make sure that their students are doing push-ups and sit-ups with the correct body postures. Under the remote learning system, the teachers could give feedback on students’ postures and techniques by asking students to upload videos of themselves doing these strength exercises, or by conducting a special video call session with them.

During your interactive online sessions with your students, pay close attention to the movements of their buttocks as they are performing the push-ups.

Oftentimes, the students find it difficult to sustain the position of their buttocks as they are lowering down their bodies. The teachers also need to make sure that their students maintain a straight back while performing these up-and-down movements.

Once the students can achieve these two postures correctly, you can challenge them to try on several variations of the push-up movements.

Jumping ropes

Jumping or skipping rope is another simple at-home exercise that, despite its simplicity, requires its performers to be in full concentration, paying intense attention to every single one of their movements and coordination of body parts to prevent falls. Performing this exercise can be really good to minimize foot injury risks.

A little trivia: According to a Science Daily article, jumping rope can burn more calories in 30 minutes than jogging over the same duration! If a person is conducting this aerobic exercise regularly, they can achieve a burn rate of 1,300 calories per hour.

Basketball practice

Just repeating the same strength and endurance practices over and over again will soon bore your students senseless. Thus, you can encourage students who have basketballs in their homes to practice simple techniques such as dribbling and shooting.

Nowadays, PE teachers can also teach their students other types of exciting basketball techniques using the NBA e-learning platform, comprising practical strategies and guides.

Through this platform, teachers can also access various capacity-building training programs under available curriculum. The curriculum comprises a lesson plan to help some students build skills through at-home exercises.

Furthermore, the lesson plans included in the platform have already been adjusted to the pedagogical needs of students from Elementary School to Senior High School levels.

The platform already has a lot of training and guidance sessions available. The Jr. NBA curriculum has been tailored to the needs of PE teachers in Indonesia, including a coaches practice plan that allows teachers to learn even more stuff to enhance and enrich their teaching methods.

The program that teachers can apply is divided into several steps, namely Rookie, Starter, MVP and All-Star.

By joining each training session, the PE teachers can earn credit that they can use to collect badges. To motivate themselves to sharpen their teaching skills, the PE teachers can also see how well they have absorbed their lessons and skills compared to other teachers during the training program. The platform also has a ranking system, allowing teachers to always motivate themselves to be the number one on the training program platform.

Furthermore, PE trainers and teachers who join the programs available through the platform can also flaunt their badges, along with the results they get from their training programs on their social media platforms as well!

Besides that, the platform can also provide reports recording all the teachers’ activities throughout the program, allowing them to also keep track of their progress. Moreover, teachers can also download and upload these documents offline when they do not have any internet connection.

The e-learning platform serves as a breakthrough in PE teaching and learning activities. Thanks to the new platform, the remote learning situation that a lot of teachers and students have to deal with amid the pandemic has not diminished the joy of PE lessons, when we have no choice but to conduct these lessons without the spontaneity and camaraderie we often find in an offline setting.

The online platform also gives PE teachers some concrete tips on how to make online sports lessons more fun for both the teachers and the students.

NBA will continue to provide new and interesting ways to help PE teachers teach sports to their students in a fun way, especially at a time when outdoor activities have been hard to come by lately.

In Indonesia, NBA has worked together with regional administrations in their attempt to promote a healthy lifestyle among Indonesia’s young generation.

Furthermore, NBA has also organized the Jr. NBA Coaches Academy, with a program that includes training for PE teachers to enhance and enrich their teaching skills, especially when they teach basketball. Over the past few years, the academy has already trained more than 52,000 teachers from 41,000 schools across 25 major Indonesian cities.

Other than targeting PE teachers across Indonesia for its training programs, the academy has also involved more than 16.5 million boys and girls across the archipelago, teaching them basic basketball skills. More importantly, the program also seeks to instill the core values of basketball, known under the acronym STAR, which stands for sportsmanship, teamwork, a positive attitude and respect.
