Traditional picnic datesgoing to the mall, seeing a movie and grabbing a bite to eatmay sound pleasant, but there is another way to spice up dates: visiting museums or art galleries. With an abundance of beautiful art to look at and contemplate, the activity offers a fresh opportunity for people to get to know each other better; and a shared experience, after all, brings people closer together.

Here are 20 local museums and art galleries in Indonesia to go to on museum dates.

Museum MACAN Jakarta

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara, or Museum MACAN, houses a considerable selection of modern and contemporary art collections from Europe, Asia and the Americas. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta. Entry price ranges from Rp 80,000 (US$5.32) to Rp 100,000.

The National Gallery of Indonesia (Galeri Nasional Indonesia/GALNAS)

The National Gallery of Indonesia is one of the main attractions for art and history enthusiasts in Central Jakarta. The gallery exhibits works of art such as paintings, sketches, graphics, sculptures, ceramics, photography, crafts and installation artshowing around 1,785 collections of works by Indonesian and foreign artists. Located in the Gambir, GALNAS, it is free and open to the public from Tuesday - Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Art: 1 New Museum

Art: 1 New Museum is an art space and art institution located in Central Jakarta, owned and managed by the Mon Décor Gallery, with more than 2,500 works of art displayed. Visitors can also participate in art activities, including seminars, discussions, workshops and art appreciation. Art: 1 New Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The ticket price ranges from Rp 50,000 to Rp 75,000. 

Salihara Arts Center

Open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Salihara Arts Center is an Indonesian collective art space in South Jakarta. Some exhibitions are free, while others cost Rp 50,000 and Rp 150,000. The place also has workshops for those who wish to get deep into acting, dance and writing. 

Ullen Sentalu Yogyakarta

Ullen Sentalu is a museum in Sleman, Yogyakarta, that exhibits Mataram dynasty culture. Paku Alam VIII opened the museum on March 1, 1997. Visitors can choose between two tour packages offered by Ullen Sentalu. The first tour, Vorstenlanden, costs Rp 100,000 and shows visitors the history of the Yogyakarta and Surakarta, Central Java, Sultanates. The second tour is the Adiluhung Mataram tour, which costs Rp 50,000 and offers a glimpse into the life of a Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, nobleman. The museum is open on Tuesday until Sunday from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The National Museum of Indonesia

The National Museum of Indonesia (Museum National Indonesia), also popularly known as Museum Gajah (Elephant Museum), is open on Monday until Sunday to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Located in Central Jakarta, the museum preserves approximately 141,000 objectsincluding prehistoric artifacts, stone sculptures, numismatics, ceramics, historical relics and geological collections. Entry costs Rp 7,500 to Rp 15,000 per person.

Nacivet Art Gallery

Nacivet Art Gallery, located on Jl. Camplung Tanduk 103, Seminyak, Bali, exhibits photographs of the island paradise and its culture as captured by camera nearly 50 years ago. The gallery sells original French artist prints at reasonable prices and is open on Monday until Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Access is free. 

Magic Art 3D Museum Jakarta

Magic Art 3D is a museum in Kota Tua, West Jakarta, known for its three-dimensional art and paintings. The museum is separated into seven zones that offer artsy and whimsical selfie spots. It is open on Monday until Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. A ticket costs Rp 40,000 to Rp 60,000 on weekdays and Rp 60,000 to Rp 80,000 on weekends.

Rumah Atsiri

Located on Jl. Watusambang in Karanganyar, Central Java, Rumah Atsiri (Atsiri's House) describes how essential oils were first discovered and spread worldwide, especially in Indonesia. The place, which keeps some of the original crucial oil-making equipment and tools, offers half-day tours, where a dedicated guide takes visitors through the creation process of essential oils. It is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors pay Rp 50,000 to get a voucher that can be redeemed for merchandise instead of entry tickets.

ISA Art and Design

ISA Art and Design is a gallery established by renowned art-collector Deborah Iskandar. The place curates and features young artists' works, especially by women, be it paintings, photos or sculptures. It also sells the pieces to visitors who wish to support the artists whose works it features. Located in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, it is open every Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Omah Budoyo Yogyakarta

Omah Budoyo Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta House of Culture) is located in Brontokusuman, Yogyakarta. The museum, owned and curated by Australian-born entrepreneur Warwick Purser, offers a variety of art activities and products of the creative economy, including craft, fashion and culinary creations. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Tuesday through Sunday.

Jogja National Museum

Established under Yayasan Yogyakarta Seni Nusantara, Wirobrajan district's Jogja National Museum is an art and culture space conceptualized as a public space featuring visual, performing and multimedia arts. The Biennale and Artjog are among the most well-known of several exhibitions held at JNM. Visitors can visit the museum free every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Selasar Sunaryo

Founded in 1998, Selasar Sunaryo (Sunaryo Gallery) is a non-profit art space and organization that aims to support the development of visual arts and culture in Indonesia. Its permanent exhibitions feature works of art by young and senior artists from Indonesia and abroad. It is located on Jl. Bukit Pakar Timur No. 100, Bandung, West Java, and open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry is Rp 25,000.

Galeria Sophilia

Galeria Sophilia displays a variety of collections, including paintings, artifacts, antiques, traditional Balinese carvings, sculptures from European and American civilizations, and Chinese armor and ceramics from the dynastic era. The museum is open every first and third Sunday of the month from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Calvin Tower, North Jakarta. The entrance fee to Galeria Sophilia is Rp 100,000 per visitor.

Moja Museum

The Moja Museum has a unique collection of artworks geared toward young adults. The museum, located in Gelora Bung Karno, Central Jakarta, has selfie-friendly themed rooms, and visitors can also roller-skate around its halls. It is open every day from 11 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. and costs between Rp 125,000 to Rp 135,000 to enter.

Rudana Fine Art Gallery

Paintings and sculptures by Balinese artists, other Indonesian artists living outside the island and foreign artists are on display at the Rudana Fine Art Gallery in Gianyar, Bali. They display classic Balinese paintings on the second floor, surrounded by traditional Balinese paintings, such as the works of I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, I Gusti Ketut Kobot, Ida Bagus Made and others. The entrance fee to the museum ranges from Rp 10,000 to Rp 20,000, and it is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Museum Wayang

Museum Wayang, also known as Museum Jakarta, is a museum dedicated to Javanese wayang puppetry. It houses a collection of over 4,000 wayang puppetsThe museum can be found on Jl. Pintu Besar Utara No. 27 in Pinangsia, West Jakarta. Entry starts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and costs visitors Rp 3,000 to Rp 5,000.

Sangkring Art Space

Sangkring Art Space is a Yogyakarta-based art gallery with an international aesthetic. The gallery, which opened on May 31, 2007, hosts exhibitions in various formats, including paintings, sculptures and installations. Visitors can also visit the Sangkring Art Project, which features multi-discipline collections, collaborations and performance arts. It is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs Rp 25,000 to enter.

Affandi Museum

Formerly a residence of the late Indonesian realist painter Affandi, the Affandi Museum now functions as a gallery for his paintings. It is located in Sleman, Yogyakarta, and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Monday through Saturday. Domestic visitors pay Rp 50,000 to enter, while international visitors pay Rp 100,000. Extra charges may apply to photograph the artist's works.

Dia Lo Gue Artspace

Dia Lo Gue Artspace (S/he You Me Artsplace) is a multidisciplinary art gallery in South Jakarta. The place has a design studio, café and souvenir shop, was founded in 2010 to increase awareness and appreciation of visual arts and design, support artists and help sustain the local creative industry. It is open every Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. without any entry fee.
