CY construction begins at Batu Ampar Port, marking development turning point

A

s an essential piece of infrastructure for Batam in its role as an international logistics hub, Batu Ampar Port is continuously improving and increasing the volume of its loading and unloading activities.

To support these activities, the Batam Development Authority (BP Batam), alongside PT Persero Batam, has broken ground on the Container Yard (CY) Development Project and Batu Ampar Container Terminal infrastructure.

A ceremony marking the start of construction was held on May 8 at the Batu Ampar Container Terminal stacking yard and was attended by a number of regional government officials.

Opening the ceremony, PT Persero Batam president director Arham S. Torik said the construction was part of the second phase of the development of Batu Ampar Port, which has a planned container capacity of 900,000 TEUs per year.

The CY development plan is the result of the signing of a collaboration agreement between BP Batam and PT Persero Batam on Aug. 31, 2023, for a period of 37 years and is the starting point for the transformation of Batu Ampar Port into a modern container terminal in line with international standards.

"There are three stages of transformation: first, the construction of the CY covering an area of 12 hectares; second, the construction of a superstructure with the addition of four quay cranes (QC) and 10 rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes; and finally, increasing productivity and connectivity," said Arham.

This infrastructure development will later be handled by PT Waskita Beton Precast as contractor and PT LAPI ITB as consultant, with the construction work expected to take 15 months to complete with an investment of around Rp 360 billion.

Responding to the CY development plan, Chairman of BP Batam Muhammad Rudi expressed his hope that the construction would increase enthusiasm for the development of Batam city, especially in the port sector.
