President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo told reporters on Friday that he hadn’t talked politics with his eldest son, Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka, in a long time, including any plans to have him serve as presidential hopeful Prabowo Subianto’s running mate.
"I haven't seen him in months," President Jokowi said of Gibran during a visit to Indramayu, West Java, as quoted by Antara.
The President was responding to questions about whether Gibran had spoken to him regarding a possible move to run alongside Gerindra Party chair Prabowo Subianto, who is currently the frontrunner for the 2024 presidential election.
Prabowo topped a public opinion survey published earlier this month, with 34 percent of respondents saying they would vote for him for president. Former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo came in second place with 30 percent, while former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan trailed with 22 percent.
The Constitutional Court is expected to issue a ruling next week that could lower the age minimum for vice presidential candidates from 40 to 35, a decision that could pave the way for Gibran to run alongside Prabowo.
Gibran is now 35 years old.
Jokowi's vast volunteer network indicated on Thursday that it would endorse Prabowo Subianto for the February 2024 election, in the strongest signal yet the President is backing his erstwhile rival.
