ollowing the screening of Spirited Away last month, Studio Ghibli enthusiasts can now enjoy My Neighbor Totoro, one of the studio’s most popular animated movies, in local cinemas until May 7.
Released in 1988, My Neighbor Totoro tells the story of two young girls who move into a house in a rural area to live closer to their sick mother. The sisters later discover that their neighbor is a spirit creature they identify as Totoro.
Kanaya Yashita Barham, media and promotion officer for organizer Kanahama, said Studio Ghibli movies were special because of the moral messages that could be found in the films.
“[It’s about] friendship and family values,” Kanaya told The Jakarta Post via a messaging app.

Prior to the screening, the organizer also held a Totoro drawing competition for elementary and kindergarten students at a shopping mall in South Jakarta, as well as a Totoro soundtrack music audition event in South Jakarta on April 30.

The three most popular drawings in the competition will be featured in the upcoming World of Ghibli Jakarta: Exhibition 2017 slated to run between August and September.
Meanwhile, the winner of the music audition will have the opportunity to perform at the exhibition.
