F

or lovers of alternative cinema in Jakarta, Kineforum cinema café has just revealed its May program themed Menolak Bala (Expelling Bad Fortune), which will run from May 15 to 28 and feature 15 films.

“We are presenting this program in a time that requires a high level of resistance against indifference, uncritical thinking, apathy, ignorance [and] self-righteous tendencies,” Kineforum stated in a press release.

According to Kineforum, the program was inspired by the mechanisms through which traditional societies survive crop failure, epidemics and other types of disasters. The expulsion of bad fortune through different rituals is seen as a form of dialogue with nature, along with its rulers, to end disasters.

The program is divided into four subthemes: the art of defiance, disastrous families, the authority of the masses and the wise provocateurs. Highlights include Andreas Johnsen’s 2013 film Ai Weiwei: The Fake Case, about the dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, as well as Tom McCarthy’s phenomenal 2015 film Spotlight, based on the true story of how a group of journalists uncovered sexual abuse within the Catholic Church in the United States.

Indonesian films include Kantata Takwa, directed by Gotot Prakosa and Eros Djarot in 2008, as well as the now-classic 1977 film Ali Topan Anak Jalanan (Ali Topan the Street Kid) by Ishaq Iskandar.

Detailed schedules will be published soon on kineforum.org. (kes)
