Margarita festival in Jakarta and Bali

Legend has it that margarita began in the 1930s when a bartender named Johnny Durlesser in Los Angeles made a drink to impress a girl he liked. Mainly consisting of tequila, the drink has evolved with the addition of other ingredients, such as peppers and fruit juice.

egend has it that the origin of margarita began in the 1930s when a bartender named Johnny Durlesser in Los Angeles made a drink to impress a girl he liked. Mainly consisting of tequila, the drink has evolved with the addition of other ingredients, such as peppers and fruit juice.

Frozita Margarita is no exception. Served in a cocktail glass, the drink consists of Jose Cuervo Especial Reposado tequila, triple sec liqueur, lime, passion fruit sorbet and red rose petals on top. It boasts a sweet and sour taste, while the soft sorbet makes it even more refreshing.

Created by mixologist Amelia “Amel” Azzai, the aforementioned margarita can be found at Publik Markette in the Grand Indonesia shopping mall, Central Jakarta. Amel was inspired by Valentine’s Day and chose Reposado because she often used it in her drinks. Meanwhile, similar to what's found in many desserts, the fresh rose petals are more than just a decoration.

"They are edible, but not many people know [it],” Amel told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Frozita Margarita is one of the drinks served in line with the country's first Cuervo Margarita Festival, held for two weeks from Feb. 12 to 25. The event involves eight culinary establishments in Jakarta and Bali, which include Por Que No, De Luca, Savoi, Superloco, Lucy in the Sky, Wilshire and Publik Markette in Jakarta as well as Rock Bar in Bali.

During the event, the establishments offer special margarita drinks. Por Que No, for instance, offers a chocolate margarita.

Founded in 1758, Jose Cuervo is said to be the oldest tequila brand in the world. According to its official website, it has a long history, even before Mexico became an independent republic, but it still maintains the same recipes that have been inherited from one generation to the next.

Meanwhile, those who prefer to get a little kick in their throat when enjoying a glass of margarita can sample jalapeno margarita, which is made of Jose Cuervo Especial Reposado tequila, slices of jalapeno, triple sec liqueur, lime and apple.

According to Amel, this drink also offers a hint of rujak (Indonesian fruit salad) because people will taste different flavors in it, sweet, sour, spicy and salty.

“It’s not that difficult to create one recipe,” said Amel, who has 10 years of experience in the industry, adding that inspiration could come from everywhere: trends, travel and what people like. “Especially if we’re behind the bar, there are many flavors that we can try […] If I’m in the mood, it can be done instantly.” (kes)
