ozens of Yogyakarta Palace and Puro Pakualaman batik are set to be showcased at the Yogyakarta Smart Park from Feb. 26 to March 4 as part of the 271st anniversary of Hadeging Nagari Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, or the establishment of the Yogyakarta sultanate.

Puro Pakualaman is located within the Yogyakarta Palace complex.

"This event aims to introduce the batik collections of Yogyakarta Palace and Puro Pakualaman to the public; each of the batik has its own philosophy," Afia Rosdiana, head of the Yogyakarta Tourism Agency's smart park division, said on Thursday as quoted by Antara.

Themed “Stories Behind the Stroke of the Canting”, referring to the tool used to apply hot wax in the batik-making process, the exhibition will display 14 and 12 of the Yogyakarta Palace and Puro Pakualaman batik collections, respectively, alongside their stories and philosophies.

Visitors can also expect to join batik-making workshops at the exhibition area and learn from artisans from both palaces on March 3-4.

"Although [the smart park] is a science center, we also like to get involved in preserving cultures and traditions, especially since batik is a cultural heritage from Yogyakarta that we have to maintain," Afia added.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is said to be a 10-meter long dodot-motif batik, which was worn by the Yogyakarta sultan’s youngest daughter GKR Bendara on her wedding day. Other collections set to be featured are batik parang, kawung and truntum.

"Many people know batik, but not many know its philosophy. Hopefully, through this event, we can educate the public about the philosophy of each batik, so that no one can misuse the motif," said GKR Bendara.

She pointed to the use of certain batik motifs in floor mats or carpets.

"I think using certain batik motifs in this way is inappropriate, as each motif has a deep philosophy," she explained. (kes)
