usician Yovie Widianto was recognized as the Best Composer of the year in the Professional category at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) on Sunday.
He received the award for his song “Maafkan Aku #TerlanjurMencinta” (I’m Sorry #ForLovingYou), performed by Indonesian singer Tiara Andini.

Yovie took to Instagram to express his gratitude for the award. “Hopefully this [award] will make the nation proud and encourage Indonesian composers as well as musicians to continue making music and having a huge impact on the music industry in Asia,” said Yovie in a video. In the video’s caption, Yovie reminisced about awards he won in the 1990s, whether as a solo artist or along with the Yovie & Nuno band and Kahitna, the successful group that propelled Yovie to national fame in the mid-1990s thanks to his trademark of sweet melodies and mighty hooks.
Yovie was named among the winners in the Professional category at the awards, while Big Hit Entertainment chairman Bang Si-hyuk won Best Executive Producer. Big Hit Entertainment is home to K-pop group BTS, whose newest song "Life Goes On" recently made history as it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the first song sung predominantly in Korean to top the chart in its 62-year history.
Indonesian singers Rizky Febian and Tiara Andini also won Best Asian Artist Indonesia and the Best New Asian Artist Indonesia, respectively.
On Instagram, Tiara wrote that the trophy paved the way for her other dreams. “Hopefully the pandemic will end soon so I can travel to Seoul and share the stage with Jungkook [a member of BTS]. I promise I will create better works in the future,” she wrote.
According to Yonhap, BTS won big at the 2020 MAMA by taking home a total of seven awards, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Worldwide Icon of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Group, Best Music Video and Best Dance Performance.
BTS member Suga also won best collaboration for “Eight”, a duet with singer-songwriter IU. (wir/wng)
