ALIKPAPAN, East Kalimantan: National Commission on Transportation Safety officials arrived in Long Apung on Monday to investigate the cause of a CASA 212-200 airplane crash in Litung Payau village, South Kayan district, Malinau regency.
The commercial plane, owned by Dirgantara Air Service (DAS) was being used to transport solar panel cells from Tarakan to Malinau when it crashed into a field on Saturday.
All crew members -- pilot Sumiskun, co-pilot Clifford Watimena and the mechanic, Sudarsono -- died in the accident.
Both Sumiskun and Clifford were found inside the plane, while Sudarsono was found outside.
The plane had departed from Juwata airport in Tarakan at 8:13 a.m. Saturday and was headed to Long Apung airport in Malinau, according to Harmoniadi, operations head of Balikpapan Search and Rescue.
Tarakan and Malinau are cities located in the northern part of East Kalimantan.
At 9:07 a.m., when the plane was at an altitude of 8,000 feet, it lost contact with the air traffic control tower at Sepinggan International Airport in Balikpapan.
East Kalimantan DAS manager Ramli Effendi Siregar said the plane was made in 1988. It was believed to have been in good condition at the time of the ill-fated solar panel transport mission on Saturday, as it had undergone a maintenance check in December, last month. -- JP
