'Kompas' daily replaces its editor in chief

T

he country's leading daily newspaper Kompas has appointed deputy chief editor Bambang Sukartiono its new editor in chief, replacing Suryopratomo, who had been at helm for eight years.

Kompas' public relations general manager Nugroho F. Yudho said Monday the change of guard was approved during a meeting of the daily's board of directors last week.

The reshuffle will come into effect Tuesday.

As part of the reshuffle, Kompas directors named Taufik H. Mihardja one of Bambang's three deputies, in addition to existing deputies Rikard Bagun and Trias Kuncahyono.

Taufik is currently the daily's managing editor.

Suryopratomo, better known as Tommy, is set to continue his career at the daily as director of communication affairs and one of Kompas deputy CEOs.

"The replacement was made as Tommy's term as the chief editor has ended," Nugroho told The Jakarta Post.

"The replacement is in line with Kompas' internal policy."

Nugroho said Kompas had limited the service of its chief editor to two four-year terms.

Tommy joined Kompas daily in February 1987, after obtaining a Masters degree from the Bogor Agriculture of Institute in 1986.

He replaced Kompas co-founder Jakob Oetama in January 2000, marking a regeneration in the daily.

During Tommy's tenure, Kompas redesigned its format. The newspaper narrowed its page, restructured its contents in an attempt to win more young readers, introduced a separate classified section and implemented computer-to-plate technology.

Kompas has since January this year started to publish a daily afternoon issue.

Nugroho said Tommy would be at the Kompas' corporate unit.

Bambang was also the news director of the TV7 television channel before the Kompas-controlled station was acquired by the TransTV.

TransTV bought in 2006 a controlling 49 percent stake in TV7, which is now called Trans7.

Kompas was first published in June 1965 and has a daily circulation of more than 500,000 copies on weekdays and some 620,000 copies on weekends.
