Heitor Villa-Lobos, born Rio de Janeiro March 5, 1887, died June 17, 1959, is the most famous Brazilian composer of the 20th century.
During his life, Villa-Lobos wrote numerous orchestras, chamber, instrumental and vocal works, and founded the Conservatorio Nacional de Canto Orteonico in 1942 and the Brazilian Academy of Music in 1945.
In commemorating his 121th birthday, the Jakarta Conservatory of Music (JCOM) in cooperation with the Brazilian Embassy in Jakarta will hold a concert, entitled A Tribute to Villa-Lobos at Erasmus Huis.
Founded in Jakarta, April, 2002, by a group of local well known musicians -- Ananda Sukarlan, Binu D.Sukaman, Iswargia R. Sudarno and Rudy Rd. Alwi -- JCOM's vision is to provide a high quality traditional western musical education.
The teaching staff have vast musical knowledge and experience, and many are current active performers in Indonesia.
At the Monday concert, famous Brazilian harmonica player Gabriel Grossi will be the guest star, playing Lobos' Concerto for Harmonica and Orchestra. The orchestral parts will be played on the piano by Adelaide Simbolon, making this concert unique.
The Lobos compositions performed at the concert are mainly piano pieces, but solo guitar (by Rusdi Purnama) and vocal compositions (by soprano Rozana Unsulangi) will also be performed.
Several young talented students from JCOM will also be performing in this concert; Randy Ryan, Victoria Audrey Sarasvathi, Stephanie Onggowinoto, Kevin Indra, Alfred Young Sugiri, Paula Sabrina, Novinia Liady, Nia Juniasih and Laura Ellisa.
Villa-Lobos' musical character blends various aspects of cultures found in Brazil, particularly the Portuguese, African and Indian, which are combined with elements of traditional European music.
In his youth, Villa-Lobos played with street musicians which became inspiration for his Choros collection (a combination of several instruments with clear Latin American melody and rhythm).
His most famous composition is perhaps "Bachianas Brasileiras", composed in 1930, which is a compilation of pieces for different instruments inspired by Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
Among pianists, "Prole do bebe" (The Baby's Family) is possibly the most popular collection of piano compositions, five of which will be performed at the concert.
A Tribute to Villa-Lobos, a friendship concert between Brazil and Indonesia, also aims to promote Villa-Lobos' work to Indonesian audiences and is a must-see for classical music lovers.
