AILKI exporting 20% more lights this year

The Association of Lighting and Electrical Industries (AILKI), predicts exports of tubular lamps and light bulbs will increase by up to 20 percent this year.
The association, which covers around 60 percent of the nation's total lamp production, groups together PT Philips Indonesia, PT Osram Indonesia, PT GE Lightening Indonesia and PT Matsushita Denko Gobel.
AILKI chairman Sjahriza Manaf said Tuesday a continued robust demand for such products was expected to push the association's total exports up to as much as US$120 million, around 20 percent more than last year's total of $100 million.
"We expect to increase our exports between 10 and 20 percent this year, with the high demand for lamps and because Phillips plans to introduce its new innovation," he said without elaborating.
The association's exports had grown by an average of 10 percent per year since 2005, with Philips responsible for some 40 percent of the total exports, Syahriza said.
In line with the government's plan to distribute 51 million energy-saving lamps to millions of households, AILKI secretary general Herman Endro said three of the four members -- Philips, Osram and GE -- would contend in the bidding process.
"We encourage them not only to take part (in the bidding) but also to operate assembling units here," Herman said.
In addition to price, Herman said, the government should consider performance and safety standards of each participant as key selection criteria in the procurement.
