SMS: Blocking websites

It is an act of stupidity.

Only totalitarian countries block websites. Does Indonesia want to be totalitarian?

I know SBY did this to satisfy the majority, but can he really stop it? But he shouldn't worry because I assume most of our Internet users will not search for that kind of movie.

Blocking websites only makes the Indonesian government look foolish to the rest of the world. One can easily use a proxy server and access blocked websites. You can't stop information. Doesn't Indonesia know?

The freedom that the Internet offers poses a challenge to authoritarian regimes from Beijing to Jeddah. It's sad but no great surprise that Indonesia has jumped on the web censorship bandwagon. The supreme irony is that Indonesia passed a freedom of information law a couple of weeks ago.

I think it is good idea to block the websites because it just makes many people angry. It is defamation of religion!

I think it is not wise policy because of many reasons. Not everyone browses those sites only to watch Fitna. There are many students who use them for their studies -- useful videos. It's better to block the film not the sites.

This action shows that our people are still immature in the freedom of accessing global information. The regulator has the mentality of the New Order regime, banning whatever they believe is forbidden for Indonesians.

I think it is too late to block all those sites because the film has spread everywhere. The government has to pay some experts to block the sites. It is better if the government focus on blocking porn sites.

Just another step against freedom. Indonesia is on the best way to become a Taliban country.
WOLFGANG

The government action to block the websites is unwise because the film can still be accessed through other websites like Google.

Fitna is Fitna, YouTube is YouTube, MySpace is MySpace. Open minded please?

Well, is this freedom of speech? Wonder what's next?

There are myriad serious issues faced by this nation. Why so much time and energy spent on this non-issue? So much ado about nothing!
FIRMAN HADI
Jakarta

Forget it. I think I watch too many movies.
RUDI SALIM

It was the most stupid action by the government. Why kill all the people in a town if only one person did a bad thing. YouTube can be educational and useful.

It doesn't matter, the thief is always smarter than the police! Someone, somehow will find a way to access Fitna. We'll just have to wait and see.

Well then, come up with an idea that'll allow the government to ban the movie only rather than whole websites. You can't call someone stupid and not offer a compromising alternative.

The government are silly, they think can block websites.

While we're at it, lets clamp down on newspapers (like the Jakarta Post) that offended someone, TV shows like "Republic Mimpi" for satirizing the so-called leaders of Indonesia, and just have some sort of Religious Police mulling about the public making sure everything goes as planned - like they do in Saudi Arabia.
I am beginning to think there's a childish cry-baby like attitude about this whole drama... "waaaah he/she made fun of me....waaaah". Grow up.
