JAKARTA: Writer Ayu Utami is currently promoting a tree adoption program to repair environmental damage in Mt. Gede, West Java.
"The program is organized by Green Radio FM (formerly Radio Utan Kayu). Every week, I climb the mountain and find soil erosion there," Ayu told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
The 39-year-old writer said the program had planted 540 trees in one hectare, including 10 trees adopted by her and her partner, photographer Erick.
Ayu, who has written two novels, Saman in 1998 and Larung in 2001, said people could adopt trees for Rp108,000 per tree for a period of three years.
The winner of the Prince Claus Award 2000 from The Hague-based Prince Claus Foundation, said the program aimed to plant trees in a five-hectare plot on the mountain.--JP/A. Junaidi
