Jakarta falters further in medal chase at Games

Jakarta is assured of a gold medal in the women's singles but overall the team failed to match its form from four years ago as the semifinal round of the National Games badminton competition wrapped up Tuesday at the Palaran badminton hall in Samarinda.

Jakarta's Adriyanti Firdasari and Pia Zebadiah lived up to their status as the top two seeds, as they set up a date in the final of the women's singles. Adriyanti eased past Febi Angguni of West Java 21-7, 21-14 while Pia rolled to a 21-11, 21-13 win over Maria Elfira of Central Java.

Simon Santoso is Jakarta's hope in the men's singles but he will be up against Andre Kurniawan of Central Java, who he lost to in the team event. Simon drubbed Ari Yuli Wahyu 21-12, 21-7 while Andre had to fight hard for a 21-19, 13-21, 21-19 win over Indra Bagus of North Sumatra.

Andre, who steered Central Java to victory in the team event, relishes the chance for a possible second scalp of a higher seeded player.

"I had been content simply for a place in the semifinals. Now I'm in the final I don't want to squander my chance," he said. "It will be nice to beat the same player for a second time."

Jakarta, which won five of seven badminton golds in 2004, was dealt a blow in the women's doubles when top seeds Endang Nursugianti and Rani Mundiastuti crashed out, although the team still harbors hopes as the scratch pairing of Jo Novita and Pia Zebadiah continued their surprise march. Endang and Rani went down to Greysia Polii and Nathalia Poluakan 20-22, 21-13, 21-16 and Jo and Pia scraped to a 16-21, 21-16, 23-21 victory over Lelyana Daisy and Shendy Puspa of East Java.

No one from Jakarta made the semis of the men's and mixed doubles.

In the men's doubles, Joko Riyadi and Rendra Wijaya lost to Bambang Supriyanto and Tony Gunawan of East Java 21-14, 21-11. In the final, veterans Bambang and Tony will face Fernando Kurniawan and Moh. Ahsan of North Maluku, 21-11, 24-22 winners over Frans Kurniawan and Lingga Lie of Central Java.

The mixed doubles semifinals were Central Java-West Java affairs. Devin Lahardi and Lita Nurlita of West Java beat Frans Kurniawan and Meiliana 18-21, 24-22, 21-11 of Central Java, while Central Java's Muhammad Rijal and Yulianti triumphed 21-7, 21-15 over Hendra A.G. and Devi Tika of West Java.

Jakarta won another four gold medals in gymnastics on Tuesday. It also won gold in rock climbing, pencak silat, baseball and wrestling.

However, Jakarta remained in third place on the medal table as of 9 p.m. local time with 91 gold medals, almost 30 behind leader East Java. East Kalimantan remained in second with 102 golds.

In the wrestling competition at the Segiri sports complex, East Java won four gold medals, while East Kalimantan, West Java and Jakarta had to be content with one apiece.

West Java trails Jakarta on the medal table with 85 golds. The team chalked up victories in rock climbing, cycling, rowing, indoor hockey and squash on Tuesday.
