AMBI: Mount Kerinci, Jambi, has shown increased volcanic activity forcing the authorities to stop all climbing activities on Sumatra's highest mountain.
The Mt. Kerinci monitoring post said the 3,805-meter volcano spewed out blackish smoke on Monday morning, reaching some 100 to 500 meters in height.
The post also reported increasing gas pressure heading east and northeast accompanied by ash falling on villages on the slopes. There were also a number of volcanic quakes.
Umar Usman, a villager on the slope in Kayu Aro district said he saw smoke at around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
"Other villagers also saw smoke but fortunately it went eastward," he said. -- JP
