AKARTA: A group of calves and cows ran panicked along the busy Cikampek-Jakarta toll road on Tuesday morning, turning a section of the vital highway into traffic chaos, police said.
Hundreds of vehicles heading for Jakarta had to slow down and could not overtake the five cows running loose, for fear of hitting the confused animals.
Traffic on the opposite lane was also disrupted because motorists slowed down fearing the cows would cross over into their lane.
Police said the cows went loose after a truck carrying them skidded into a ditch and overturned, apparently because the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
"The driver turned his steering wheel too far left, and went into the ravine," said Chief Brigadier Zulkifli of the highway patrol, as quoted by detik.com.
He said one cow was killed at the scene and the rest ran away before highway patrol managed to bring them off the toll road. -- JP
