JAKARTA: A brawl between students from Indonesian Christian University (UKI) and Bung Karno University (UBK) broke out Tuesday.

Two cars parked outside Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital and YAI campus in Salemba, Central Jakarta, had their windows smashed when students hurled stones and cups of mineral water at each other.

The fracas, which started at about 3:30 p.m., only lasted minutes. The cause was never clarified, but it began when dozens of UKI students started chasing one UBK student. Several minutes later, a group of UBK students and residents set upon the UKI students.

Police stopped the brawl by firing warning shots and restraining students on their own campuses.

UKI lecturer Duma Barung condemned the incident. "What we regret most is these incidents usually have no clear cause," he said, as quoted by detik.com.

It was not the first quarrel between students attending the neighboring campuses. Two months ago, UKI students fought with students from YAI, the adjacent accounting school. -- JP

I am 23 year older, just graduated from one of the universities in Jakarta. It never ceases to sadden me, acknowledging that violence ridiculously sprouts among university students. These alleged people hold sway the future of the country, thus can somebody answer me to what direction they are taking us altogether? I have absolutely no idea at how they do perceive themselves, but in my position, I have an effortless awareness, even since I was in elementary school, that we students are significant in that we give birth new inventions, offer new thoughts, light up ideas, unlike that of committing such a pointless, degrading action.
