JAKARTA: At least 68 of the countries top swimmers will compete in the Speedo Indonesia Open Swimming Championship 2008 at Bung Karno swimming stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta from Thursday to Sunday.
The Indonesian Swimming Association (PRSI) official in charge of training, Lukman Niode, said the event was designed to uncover talent to be included in the elite training squad for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta.
Lukman said the tournament would feature 30 events in which only the country's top 20 swimmers in their respective events could compete.
"This is the first time we did not use age groups, allowing any junior swimmers to have the chance to beat their seniors. Similar to Richard Sambera," said Lukman, referring to veteran swimmer, who won the SEA Games gold medal from 1989 to 2005.
The tournament is jointly organized by PRSI and the international swimsuit brand Speedo, which is supplied by PT Mitra Adiperkasa. --JP
