Cole strikes to lead at Ancol bowl tournament

Matthew Cole of Indonesia made a sizzling strike in the last frame, then looked back to the scoreboard and pumped his fists knowing that his name headed the standings in the first block of the inaugural Ancol Open Tenpin Bowling Championship men's division on Friday.

Starting the day with a modest 188 in game 1 and a whopping 288 in game 2, Cole slumped in game 3 with 177. Looking relaxed throughout the game, he regained his momentum to card consistently 196, 191, 235, 236 and 205 in the eight-game showdown to total 1,716.

Trailing by two pins was Thailand's Sithiphol Kunaksorn with 1,714. Filipino Biboy Rivera came in third with 1,680.

In fourth and fifth places were Malaysian Zaid Izland with 1,677 and Thai's Phoemphun Yaksem with 1,656.

"Other bowlers are playing very well and they can beat me. But I only think about my game. I believed I could win," Cole told The Jakarta Post in a postmatch interview.

He said composure was key to taking the first-round lead and he looked forward to Saturday's game.

"I feel no pressure at all even though I took the lead today. The lanes are the same and I will continue to bowl extremely well tomorrow. There's no changes in tactics," the Australian-born bowler said.

"I hope I can win tomorrow. I've won the Men's Grade A earlier. If I managed back-to-back wins, that'd be awesome," he said.

Several other Indonesian bowlers also kept up their hunt for the title in this first edition of the Rp 882 million (US$80,181) tournament at Jaya Ancol Bowling Center in North Jakarta.

Ari A totaled 1,655 to finish sixth, while the country's best prospect Ryan Lalisang came in eighth with 1,645, followed by 10th, 11th and 13th ranked Oscar, Rangga and Henky S with 1,604, 1,603, 1,575, respectively.

The Southeast Asian bronze medalist, teenager Dennis Ranova, carded 1,557 to come 16th.

Earlier in the day in the women's division, host bowlers had to face strong challenges from visiting contenders who secured the top six slots in the standings.

Indonesia's top bowlers Tannya Roumimper, Happy Soediyono and Sharon Limansantoso settled for seventh, eight and ninth positions with 1,537, 1,529 and 1,518.

Joung Myo-boub of Korea earned her pole position with a total score of 1,660.

The 2000 World Young Team gold medalist was 57 pins ahead of second Chan Shuk Han of Hong Kong, who had 1,603. Chan's fellow bowler, Vanessa Fung came third with 1,588. Fourth, fifth and sixth places went to Singaporean Nicole Wong, Filipina Liza Del Rosario and Korean Park Jin Hee who struck 1,585, 1,572 and 1,565.

"The lanes are not easy. I had to be very cautious throughout the eight games," Joung said, as quoted by www.abf-online.org.

Fellow Korean Kim Eun-jung said,"I'll have to concentrate tomorrow if I want to make the stepladder finals."

The men and women games will resume competition Saturday. In the second block of eight games, only the top six will advance to the stepladder finals later in the day.

The Ancol event is the last leg in the Asian Bowling Federation this season. Results of this leg will decide the top 16 Asian bowlers who will contend in the ABF Tournament of Champions, to be held next year at the same venue.
