YOGYAKARTA: A university medical school and an NGO held a charity concert Friday called "AIDS I am in Love" to raise awareness of the disease ahead of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1.

The medical faculty from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta teamed up with an NGO called Kebaya, which supports transvestites with the disease, to stage the show. Artists including jazz singer Syaharani, Aji Idol, UGM choir group, Glenn Fedley, Afgan and Rio Febrian, all performed at the concert to show their support for the cause.

According to Syaharani, the concert aimed to raise awareness of the disease and show support for people living with HIV/AIDS.

"I hope the concert supports those with the disease, and encourages them to keep fighting and going about their daily lives without feeling discriminated against," she said.

"People with HIV/AIDS need support and assurances that they can discuss their illness with people."

Tika from Kebaya said currently the NGO was supporting 23 transvestites with HIV/AIDS and conducting meetings every two weeks offering advice about living with the disease. --JP
