he top seeds at the Cigna Open tennis tournament remain in contention for titles after easing through the quarterfinals of the Rp 200 million (US$17,000) event in Jakarta on Friday.
Christopher Rungkat and Sunu Wahyu Trijati, seeded first and second in the men's draw, are on track to meet in the final after wins over less experienced opponents.
Christopher dispatched home Aditya Hari Sasongko 6-4, 6-2, while defending champion Sunu had easier task in his 6-2, 6-0 drubbing of David Agung Susanto.
In Saturday's semifinals, Christopher will take on fourth seed and veteran Adrian Raturandang, who was stretched to three sets in his 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Sebastian Dacosta.
Sunu will play fifth seed Nesa Artha, who stunned third seed Prima Simpatiaji 6-2, 6-3.
Nesa said he felt no extra pressure about having to face the defending champion.
"We've been training together because we're Davis Cup teammates. We pretty much know each other's playing styles. The odds are even," he said.
Christopher, who won last year's junior men's doubles titles at the French Open and US Open with partner Henri Kontinen of Finland, said he was optimistic about his semifinal match against Adrian.
"This is not the first time we'll play each other. In fact, in previous matches, I often won," he said.
Christopher also has a shot in the doubles, alongside partner Nesa. They will play Andery Styawanto and Peter Handoyo after booking a spot in the semis with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Agung Bagus Dewantoro and Enrico Satria.
As the highest seed to drop out of contention, Prima said a nagging injury and his opponent's better play on the day had resulted in his exit.
"Nesa played better than me. I was slowed down by my knee injury," said Prima, adding he had suffered from a nagging tendon injury in his right knee since Monday.
He also had to pull out of his doubles match with partner Sunu.
The women's draw could also see the top seeds meet in the final, with Jessy Rompies and Beatrice Gumulya, both members of Indonesian Fed Cup team, advancing to the semis.
Top seed Jessy will next take on fourth seed Mia Sacca, after her quarterfinal opponent, Cynthia Melita, retired due to illness. Mia beat Dian Anggraini 6-3, 6-1.
Second seed Beatrice Gumulya will be up against the young Grace Sari Ysidora, after ousting Laili Rahmawati Ulfa 6-3, 7-5. Grace ousted Angelika Jogasuria 6-4, 6-1.
