SURABAYA, East Java: Hundreds of squatters living along riverbanks in Surabaya held a rally at the Surabaya municipal council Wednesday, rejecting the upcoming planned eviction by the municipal and provincial administration.
"The planned eviction is a misstep. The current floods cannot be blamed on those living along riverbanks," said secretary general of the Surabaya RiverBank Community Group Andreas Wahyudi.
According to Andreas, the recurrent floods were due to the lack of river dredging.
"It doesn't make sense that government is unable to dredge the rivers because of the homes there," he said. - JP
