IBL teams vying for places in playoffs

After a month-long break from the first round of games, the 2009 Indonesian Basketball League (IBL) resumes with the second round, which runs from May 6 to June 16.

The second round comprises the fourth to sixth series, to be held in Jakarta (Bung Karno Basketball Hall, May 6-10), Surabaya (Kertajaya Stadium, May 28-June 2) and Bandung (Citra Arena, June 12-16).

After the first round, which also comprised three series, Satria Muda Britama topped the 10-team standings after sweeping all nine of its games. Garuda Flexi Bandung is in second place with an 8-1 record, followed by XL Aspac on 6-3.

The first three series were held in Jakarta, Malang and Bandung, between Jan. 22 and March 3.

"The IBL's second round will determine which teams will make the playoffs. We hope to see some surprises in this round," Indonesian Basketball Association (PERBASI) deputy chairman Setia Darma Madjid said Wednesday at a press conference in Jakarta.

This weekend's games will be shown live on TV One from 3 p.m.

The top six teams at the end of the second round will go to the playoffs.

The third-ranked team will face sixth-ranked team, while the fourth-ranked team will take on the fifth-ranked team.

The winners will them move on to stage 2 of the playoffs, where the number one and two teams await.

The playoffs will be in the new home-and-away format planned for next year.

"The home-and-away format is an innovation by the IBL to encourage teams to organize the event and build stronger bonds with their fans," said IBL commissioner and director of promoter Mahaka Sports, Hasani Abdulgani.

Ferry Jufri, the manager of Palembang-based Muba Hangtuah, supported the new format, saying it would draw more fans to the games.

Hangtuah is in 10th place, with a 1-8 record.
