EGAL, Central Java: A total of 14 people died between Tuesday and Friday in Tegal after drinking beverages sold in a kiosk owned by Tomo on Jl. Yos Sudarso.
Some of them died at home, while others died while receiving medical care in hospital. Some other victims are still receiving intensive treatment at a local hospital.
Sr. Comr. Dewa Bagus Made Suharya, chief of Pekalongan regional Police, which also oversees Tegal, said it was highly likely the victims died because of the poison contained in the drinks sold at Tomo's kiosk.
"We're still investigating the case," he said, adding the police had also questioned Tomo and two of his employees.
Tomo told the police he used a mixture of bio-ethanol, water and coconut sugar to make the drink.
"We have yet to name a suspect in the case," Dewa Bagus said.
He added, however, if it was proven the drink did kill the victims, both the seller and those responsible for preparing the beverages would be charged.
Three people were previously reported dead after drinking similar beverages in Waturoyo subdistrict, Margoyoso district, Pati regency, Central Java.
Although the Central Java police has been intensifying its fight against these drink sellers, the number of people who die from drinking mixed beverages of this type is on the increase.
