JAKARTA: Plenty of singers are turning to acting in music videos these days, and more than a few try their luck on the big screen, but not many get off to a flying start.

Singer Judika is certainly one of the latest.

The 30-year-old singer won the prize for Best Male Newcomer at the 2009 Indonesia Movie Awards for his role in Iqbal Rais’ comedy Si Jago Merah (The Red Fire).

The runner-up in 2004’s Indonesian Idol plays Rojak Panggabean, a student who works as a part-time firefighter to pay his tuition fees.

“I’m really grateful and surprised because the contestants included [actors] from the film Laskar Pelangi [Rainbow Warriors],” Judika told kapanlagi.com. “Although the actors and actresses in Laskar Pelangi are just kids, they were really popular.”

The star, born Judika Nalon Abadi Sihotang in Sidikalang, North Sumatra, on Aug. 31 1978, has shown his musical talent since his early years.

The sixth of seven children formed a band of seven with his brother Roy and two of his friends. The band was hired to do gigs at a five-star hotel in Brastagi, North Sumatra.

Judika also won first-prize in North Sumatra in the singing competition “Bahana Suara Pelajar” (The echo of students’ voices) and third prize at the national level.

After his success on Indonesian Idol, Judika released two albums: a compilation album Cinta in 2005 and his first solo album One in 2007. Judika has publicly said that his third album will be released after the 2009 presidential election.

On his achievement at the Indonesia Movie Awards, he said: “I don’t know what to say but this award is definitely a burden for me. I will have to do my best in my next films.” — JP
