JAKARTA: As of May 20, East Jakarta municipality has culled 1,609 birds it confiscated during a series of spot checks in a bid to free the area from domesticated birds and prevent the spread of avian flu.
East Jakarta Animal Husbandry Office head Adnan Ahmad said his office had conducted the raids in 10 subdistricts, seizing 746 chickens, 34 ducks, 703 pigeons and 126 swans.
The raids, he said, were in accordance with Bylaw No. 4/2007, on the control and distribution of birds in the city, which declares all residential areas as fowl-free zones.
Exotic birds are permissible, but are subject to intensive supervision from the animal husbandry office.
"We plan to conduct the spot checks once a week until the municipality is fowl-free," he was quoted as saying by beritajakarta.com. - JP
