Fish porridge, steamed crab, roast duck

F

or gourmands, Kelapa Gading is a food haven. On just one part of its main street, you will find more than a hundred eating joints - on less than a one-kilometer stretch.

Dotted with stalls offering fragrant smoke from the grill and herbal aroma from huge pans, street chefs prepare smorgasbords, from seafood porridge to black pepper crab almost around the clock.

Day and night, the restaurants, warung, tents, and hawkers each promote a certain region of the country or a certain species from the animal kingdom. Cuisines from Borneo, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and even Hong Kong and Papua, welcome you here.

The line of hot dishes and sweet desserts will make you hungry even if you just had a meal two hours ago: steamed fish, coconut milk soup with herbs, roast duck with red glistening skin, shrimp rice, chicken rice, deep fried frogs legs, Balinese suckling pig, roast pork, noodles with soup or crisply fried and served with a bowl of sauteed seafood and vegetables, a hundred kinds of porridge, black pepper crab, grilled squid, dim sum, homemade ice-cream, pastries, cozy fruit market... Which one will you savor first?

Let us just take one part of Kelapa Gading. It's called Jl. Boulevard Raya. The road starts from the Pulomas junction at the southern part of the area all the way to the north.

There are hundreds of restaurants along the boulevard that could fill half of this newspaper's page. Here are some of them, (listed with the house specialities) arranged in geographical order, starting from Pulomas junction to the north.
