Clarification sought over police wiretap by KPK

J

AKARTA: The National Police Commission has sought clarification from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) over circulating rumors that the KPK had recorded a telephone conversation during which a police official asked for money, a member of the police commission said Thursday.

"We have met with KPK deputy Bibit Samad Rianto to discuss this and are now waiting for official clarification," Adnan Pandu Praja told a press conference.

The results of the clarification were to be given directly to the national police chief for further consideration.

Several weeks ago, chief detective Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji acknowledged he had been wiretapped while making a telephone conversation, during which he was believed to have asked for more than Rp 10 billion to help speed up investigations into the Century Bank scam.

However, Susno insisted that the statement was made to attract those who had wiretapped him. "I made up the statement because I knew I was being wiretapped," he said.

Susno then protested against those who had wiretapped him, saying the authority to wiretap should have only been used to investigate allegations of graft. Even though Susno mentioned no names, many believe he was targeting the KPK in the statement.
