OJOKERTO: After a series of delays, the electric-diesel train serving the Surabaya-Mojokerto route was launched recently.

Named Arek Surokerto, which translates into transportation for low-income people, the train will serve as an alternative means of transportation during the annual exodus heralded by the Idul Fitri celebrations.

Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said during the launch that this kind of transportation means had proved to be effective in reducing railway accidents, mostly because short-haul train routes were more easy to monitor.

Trains serving such routes, he added, would also be provided for the Surabaya-Gresik-Lamongan-Babat route, as well as the Lawang-Kepanjen route in Malang.
