AKARTA: In addition to her appearance in actress-turned-director Lola Amaria's movie on female migrant workers, young actress Titi Sjuman is getting ready for a role that might prove controversial for the Indonesian film industry.
In the planned short film, the 28-year-old actress will be cast as Lola's lesbian partner. The movie will be shot in between sessions of Lola's feature Minggu Pagi di Victoria Park (Sunday Morning at Victoria Park), which tells the story of Indonesian workers in Hong Kong - minus the portrayal of the homosexual relationships that are part of their lives.
"No such *lesbian stories* form part of Minggu Pagi di Victoria Park. But, in between, Lola wants to shoot a shorter one about a lesbian migrant worker whose partner will be played by me," said Titi as quoted by entertainment newsportal kapanlagi.com last week.
Despite being in the same context of the lives of migrant workers, it's a bit of a challenge for Titi to switch from playing the role of Lola's sister in the feature film to becoming her lover in the shorter one.
"It's like you have to switch your brain from one thing to another in such a short time," said Titi, who is married to musician Aksan Sjuman.
"The lesbian part is not that difficult as I am an observer of that kind of relationship. It's the shifting from being a sister to a lover that's challenging." - JP
