aster Island is a tiny island that sits in the vast Pacific Ocean, while Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia, a vast archipelago of islands in Southeast Asia. Yet amazingly both places have a remarkable similarity, on Easter Island and in Jakarta, huge handmade structures rise dramatically from the landscape.
On Easter Island these huge structures stare out at sea, while in Jakarta the inhabitants see the structures and stare at them, wondering about their true purpose and why they were built.
Some Jakartans say these monoliths that straddle many of the capital's major thoroughfares are the pylons for a monorail system which would help alleviate the city's totally choked traffic problem.
Others are not so sure. "Where is the monorail?" they ask. "Will it ever be built?" It really is time for some serious answers to be given about the disgusting eyesores that are the pillars for Jakarta's mooted monorail.
Is the monorail system going to be completed or are the pillars to remain a strange version of urban installation art and at best, a convenient background for bill posters and graffiti artists?
The Jakarta Monorail is a brilliant and efficient method of helping solve Jakarta's disastrous traffic situation. As a concerned reader of The Jakarta Post I do hope the Jakarta city government can facilitate the completion of the monorail as a matter of priority.
