Top seeds Ayu and Sunu stumble at Bukit Asam event

The Bukit Asam Open tennis tournament saw top seeds fall out of the competition in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Friday.

Women's top seed Ayu Fani Damayanti was leading veteran Romana Tejakusuma 4-3 in the opening set when a knee injury forced her to forfeit the game.

Romana will next take on Livinia Tananta, who brushed aside Beatrice Gumulya 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinal.

"I was really cautious about even playing, because of the nagging pain I'd been feeling for the past week," said Ayu, 20, after the match.

"I somehow forced myself to take to the court."

In the men's draw, second seed Sunu Wahyu Trijati lost 6-4, 6-2 to David Agung in the quarterfinals. David will next meet Andery, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Agung Bagus, in Saturday's semifinals.

The other semifinal will feature top seed Christopher Rungkat taking on doubles partner Nesa Arta.

The two also kept their doubles hopes alive after beating Faisal and Seno 6-3, 6-1 for a place in the final against Sunu and Surya, who stopped Anshari and Hendri Susilo 6-3, 6-4.

In the women's doubles final, with Beatrice and Jessy Rompies will play Ayu Fani and Lavinia.

The Bukit Asam Open is being used as a tryout for national team players before the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Laos in December, where Indonesian will be gunning for two gold medals.

Team manager Diko Murdono said the gold medals were expected to come from the women's players, while he was content to settle for silver from the men's players.

Diko said Indonesia would have its best prospects for gold in the team competition.

"From there, we'll see where else we can snatch gold," he said.

The women's squad comprises four players: Ayu, Livinia, Jessy, Beatrice and Ayu Fani; while Christopher, Nesa and Sunu make up the men's team.
