SURABAYA: The Malang branch of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has been criticized for forbidding Muslims from watching the new 2012 movie.

Islamic sociologist Prof. Nur Syam said Tuesday there was no need for the MUI to ban Muslims from watching the film because people were interested and would still be able to think rationally about it.

2012 is a new film by Roland Emmerich, produced by Sony Pictures. It is about the Mayan doomsday starring John Cusack.

"In the 1990s there was a similar film titled The Day After Tomorrow, which depicted the story of a climatologist trying to figure out a way to save the world from abrupt global warming," the sociologist said.

Nur Syam said the movie would not destroy Muslims' faith because viewers would understand the movie was fictional.

The MUI claimed the film was inappropriate to watch because only Allah knew when doomsday would arrive. - JP
