Leonardo Ringo, the guitarist of Jakarta's own independent outfit, Zeke and the Popo, has decided to go solo.
He has been working on a new project under the name Bill and has stepped out of his comfort zone to collaborate with musicians from various musical genres. The result, an album titled The Sun, is breathtaking and will take you right back to the 90s, a time when flannel was hot.
Playing guitar in a band is a cool thing to do, but having your own solo album is every muso's dream.
"It felt right at the time, so I just did it. I got a lot of support from my band. So, I decided to pursue the solo album," says Leo.
He chose to work with producers that would challenge him musically.
"I picked Hendra Perdanaand *Anda* and Dharmo Soedirman as my producers. Both are from different backgrounds. I know Anda from my high school years and Dharmo is a good musician from Komunitas Jazz Kemayoran," he explained.
"I also picked people that weren't from the Jakarta independent music scene, so that I could find different angles. I tried to mix two different worlds so that I could stand bravely in the grey area," he said.
Anda (also a solo artist) and Dharmo helped Leo find the right formula for The Sun. They also play in Leo's supporting band on stage.
The Sun was produced with help from Melanie Wilson from Amazing in Bed, Kartika Jahja, Indra Perkasa from The Tomorrow People Ensemble, Christo Putra from Dear Nancy and Mian Meuthia among others.
But Leo is philosophical about his success. "I am not aiming high. To have this album completed and released is already a big achievement for me. If you happen to know there are people who always want to help and support you that is a good thing. The rest is a bonus."
