Your comments on the death of former president Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid and his signature legacy.

Gus Dur is not only the father of tolerance. He is also one of the greatest fathers of unity in diversity, great empathy and philanthropy against poverty and even distribution for the whole people of Indonesia and the future of the world. Farewell.

Bapak Abdurrahman Wahid, your great leadership will be always in our hearts and will be remembered forever all over Indonesia.

Gus Dur led a life well lived. Because of the power of his ideas, a new generation of Indonesians grew up advocating pluralism, love and respect, not of adversity but of diversity of faiths, and respect for the beliefs of minorities.

His ideas and values live in the hearts and minds of the new Indonesians.

What Gus Dur did to strengthen interfaith relations is laudable, but I question the proposal to make him a hero. He was impeached. Let’s not forget he was as human as the rest of us. I don’t agree with the hero status.

The greatest legacy of Gus Dur’s administration was to try building bilateral relations with Israel.

The tragedy of Gus Dur’s life is that his message of tolerance was only supported by the people who already agreed. The ignorant, radical and dictatorial village preachers never listened to him.

Gus Dur’s message will only come through when it is actively, loudly and exemplarily supported by the government, school teachers and preachers. Only then can Gus Dur be remembered as the important leader he was and can his corrupt and horrible pre-sidency be forgiven and forgotten.

May Gus Dur rest in peace. His legacy remains. My deepest and most sincere sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the family and the entire nation.

Selamat jalan, Gus Dur. The world will miss the tolerance and inclusiveness that was your trademark.

A great loss for Indonesia, those that caused your downfall when you were president and stabbed you in the back should hang their heads in shame. Rest in peace, Gus Dur.

For some fundamentalist Muslims, Gus Dur was too liberal. For the minority, Gus Dur was a hero who applied the Unity in Diversity (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika) principles when he was in office.

He was a father of peace who wanted all religions symbols to be united in a harmonious life. But for me, I appreciate him as someone who led this beloved country. Go with God, Mr. President!
